“Beer, it’s the best damn drink in the world.” ~ Jack Nicholson
According to The Beer Connoisseur Online, San Diego is home to some of the most revered (and award-winning) brewers in the nation – and, is renowned for its brewing innovation. It’s particularly known for its unique and bolder India Pale Ales (IPAs). Karl Strauss Brewing Company is the trailblazing grandpa of the bunch, opening its doors in downtown San Diego in early 1989. Over the next several years came Callahans, Pizza Port, Hops! Bistro & Brewery, Pacific Beach Brewhouse, Cerveceria La Cruda and Baja Brewing Company. Today, there are more than 70 operating brew houses in town with more in the works. What a (blessed) change from just a decade and a half ago when Coors Light was San Diego’s brew of choice.
Brewery tours and tastings, paired with food from aspiring future restaurant owners or a food truck, make for one seriously fresh date. Head to our sister site – The Wandering Ex-Housewife – to find fodder for more than 65 dates:
