Iron Mountain Trail is one of the best trails in San Diego proper. Each time you go, it’s offers you a different experience—in spring, it will make you happy, happy, happy. For maximum peace and quiet, head here during the week and do NOT be afraid of hiking after dark. It’s about three miles to the mountaintop where you’ll find sweeping and distant views of San Diego and picnic tables or boulders for sitting, eating and/or gazing. For sure, you’ll see white tailed bunnies—and you might be lucky enough to spot an endangered kangaroo rat, tarantulas, scorpions, millipedes or a coyote (oh my!). During the summer months, be on the lookout for rattlesnakes. Iron Mountain is a fabulous destination for a natural-style date, especially one that involves a sunset. The trailhead is located at the junction of Poway Road and Highway 67. Dogs are allowed on leash.
