You don’t have to look hard at the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve to see two pleasing natural features not seen much in San Diego: huge oak trees and a lake. The 700-acre preserve is also home to a canyon, coastal sage scrub, chapparal-covered hills, wild flowers (in the spring), bird song (all year round), a small seasonal creek (when it rains), and several trails. (Not even nature is perfect, so be on the lookout for snakes and poison oak.) It’s a great place for a natural-style date, which should include a picnic to be enjoyed on a picnic table under the shade of an oak stand or the shores of Lake Poway. There is a small paved parking lot with a map… or, you can pick up a may online or at Lake Poway. Dogs are allowed on leash.
