Somehow, back in 1868, city leaders had the foresight to know that the 1,200 scrub-filled acres that are now home to Balboa Park were special. Thanks to them, and the extra beautification that occurred as a result of the city’s hosting of the 1915-16 Panama Exposition, visitors and locals in the 21st century have a bona fide treasure to fill countless hours of leisure time. Today the park is home to 17 museums, 9 performing arts venues, 20 cultural or recreational attractions (including the world famous San Diego Zoo), 19 gardens, as well as numerous restaurants, trails, dog parks, and playgrounds. Residents get free admission to select museums every Tuesday and the park now has free WiFi! (Not only is Balboa Park a Date Oxygen Place…it also made the Stunning List!
